Launching the Regional Sustainable urban mobility plan for the Pomurje Region
The Pomurje region is embarking on the preparation of its Regional Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) – a key strategic document that will define the future of transport and mobility in the region. The aim of the strategy is to develop a more connected, accessible and sustainable transport system that improves the quality of life for residents and supports regional development.
The preparation of the SUMP for Pomurje is coordinated by ZTR Lendava, while the expert preparation is carried out by Razvojna agencija Sinergija together with the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (UIRS), ZUM urbanizem, planiranje, projektiranje, and Biro skiro. The process is taking place in collaboration with municipalities, national institutions and key regional stakeholders.
Sustainable urban mobility planning represents a modern approach to transport management that puts people and quality of life at its centre. It goes beyond roads and infrastructure, addressing all modes of travel – walking, cycling, public transport and the car – as well as access to services, safety and environmental impacts. Since transport flows extend beyond municipal boundaries, regional-level planning is essential for better coordination between municipalities, more efficient transport management and the development of shared solutions. The involvement of key stakeholders from various fields contributes to more aligned outcomes and a higher-quality final document.
The SUMP is a regional strategic document that comprehensively addresses transport and mobility. It defines the vision, goals and measures for mobility development in the region and connects municipalities and the state in planning transport solutions, based on the principles of sustainable mobility that prioritise people, accessibility and quality of life.
Key objectives of the SUMP
- a more connected region
- accessible mobility for all residents
- greater use of sustainable modes of transport
- more efficient use of transport infrastructure
- reduction of the negative impacts of transport
How is the SUMP being prepared?
The strategy is being developed in phases, in line with national guidelines:
- Phase A: Establishing working conditions – Setting up the organisation, collaboration structures and conditions for preparing the strategy.
- Phase B: Process setup – Planning the workflow, engaging stakeholders and coordinating activities.
- Phase C: Defining the desired state – Developing the vision for mobility and key objectives.
- Phase D: Analysis of the current situation – Reviewing the existing state, challenges and opportunities in the region.
- Phase E: Defining the direction of action – Determining strategic orientations and concrete measures.
- Phase F: Preparing and adopting the strategy – Drafting the final document and taking it through the adoption process.
- Phase G: Implementation – Implementing measures, monitoring progress and adapting as needed.
This phased structure ensures a systematic and transparent preparation process and a high-quality final document.
Through the SUMP, we aim to create a transport system for Pomurje that is:
- more accessible for all residents,
- safer and more efficient,
- more environmentally friendly.
The strategy will serve as an important foundation for future decisions on mobility and regional development.
